I have a high level of respect for people making a living (many indeed making a very good one) in sales. From my friend Pete in direct-mail sales to Terence in stock broking, I admire people who can work with other people and organizations, communicate about a product or service, sell it, and earn an income that way.
Doubly so for people selling life insurance. I spent 1987 through 2000 in the communications department for three different life insurers (which in the 1990s decided to become financial services companies and got swallowed up by larger entities). I learned to respect the statement “Nothing happens until somebody sells something” and came to understand that my own salary was paid out of the overhead funded by the sales revenue and investment income of mutual life insurers.
